New York & Albany Reverse Phone Lookup
Updated 2026
New York doesn't have a CCPA-style consumer privacy law, but it does have its own rules that affect what happens after a lookup.
The SHIELD Act
New York's SHIELD Act requires businesses holding New Yorkers' private information to maintain reasonable security safeguards. It's aimed at data breaches rather than lookup services directly, but it's part of why legitimate data brokers operating in New York publish security and privacy policies — worth checking before you pay for a report.
Albany and upstate area codes
Albany uses area code 518, shared with the wider Capital Region. Other New York State area codes include 212/646/332 (Manhattan), 718/347/929 (outer boroughs), 585 (Rochester), 716 (Buffalo), and 315 (Syracuse). As with anywhere else, portability means the area code tells you where the number was originally issued, not necessarily where the caller is now.
Reporting unwanted calls
New York residents can complain to the New York Attorney General's office and the FTC. Numbers with a pattern of complaints are exactly the kind of thing spam-report databases (including the one behind this site) are built to surface before you even pick up.
